Mali's Political Turmoil: Former Premier's Arrest Highlights Crackdown
Mali's former Prime Minister, Moussa Mara, was detained for supporting jailed opponents of the ruling military junta. Charged with undermining state authority, his arrest marks the latest action in the junta's suppression of dissent. Mara's trial is scheduled for September 29, 2025.

Mali's former Prime Minister, Moussa Mara, has been detained after publicly expressing solidarity with critics of the ruling military junta. His arrest signifies a concerning turn in the nation's political climate, coinciding with Mali's first major pro-democracy rally since military leaders took control nearly four years ago.
According to his lawyer Mountaga Tall, Mara faces charges of undermining state authority, inciting public disorder, and spreading false information, following his visit to jailed critics and a supportive media post. His legal team is contesting the charges and his detention, Tall stated on platform X.
Under the leadership of Gen. Assimi Goita, who extended his power for five more years, Mali remains embroiled in political instability that has swept across the region. The arrest exemplifies the ongoing crackdown on dissent as Mali navigates its troubled path toward stability.
