In a sharp critique, Congress leader Anand Sharma on Monday condemned US President Donald Trump's comments on India, calling them 'belittling and unacceptable.' He urged the Indian government to resist pressure from Trump, who seeks a less favorable trade deal.
Sharma, reflecting on President Trump's recent 25% tariff announcements against India, emphasized the need for the Indian government to safeguard national interests. He called for full transparency and involvement of Parliament and political leaders in any agreements with the US.
Highlighting the resilience of India's economy, Sharma encouraged the pursuit of robust trade agreements with the UK and the EU, and deeper market engagements with African Union, ASEAN, GCC, and LAC regions. He reiterated that India, as the world's fourth-largest economy, is capable of engaging on equal footing in international trade.
