Former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik, who also held gubernatorial positions in Goa, Bihar, Meghalaya, and Odisha, passed away on Tuesday due to a protracted illness. He was 79, and his career was marked by both significant achievements and notable controversies.

Malik's tenure in Jammu and Kashmir was eventful, overseeing the significant political move of abrogating Article 370, transforming the state's status. His career was also clouded by allegations of bribery related to major projects, which led to a CBI investigation.

Satyapal Malik had been under intensive care for several health conditions, including diabetic kidney disease and hypertension. Despite aggressive medical treatments, including advanced critical care and support, he succumbed to his illnesses on 5 August 2025 at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.
