Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will officially unveil the State Education Policy (SEP) this Friday at Chennai's Anna Centenary Library Auditorium. This policy, crafted by a governmental committee led by retired High Court Judge Justice D Murugesan, has been anticipated since its completion in 2024.

This development follows prolonged resistance against the National Education Policy (NEP) advocated by the central government. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led administration in Tamil Nadu has been a vocal opponent of the NEP, denouncing it as contrary to social justice and an effort to enforce Hindi in the state. As a result, Tamil Nadu has staunchly refused its implementation.

In May, tensions escalated when Tamil Nadu moved to the Supreme Court, alleging that nearly Rs 2,200 crore in central funds were withheld because of its opposition to the NEP. The state accused the Center of unconstitutional actions by tying Samagra Shiksha Scheme funds to compliance with the NEP and the PM SHRI Schools Scheme. The state seeks the release of Rs 2,291.30 crore alongside interest and a directive for timely disbursement in line with the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.
