The West Bengal government has opted not to suspend four officers from active election duty despite instructions from the Election Commission of India (ECI). Instead, the officers have been removed from their election-related responsibilities.
According to West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, enforcing a disciplinary action like suspension on these officers, who have shown consistent sincerity and competence, would be too harsh. Pant communicated this stance in a letter to the ECI.
The state has also initiated an internal investigation into the matter and is reviewing existing processes and procedures related to the conduct of elections, as indicated by Chief Secretary Pant.
