Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Manoj Jha has openly critiqued Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent Independence Day address, which observed the centennial of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Jha questioned the PM's commendations for the RSS, suggesting Modi should have availed insights from historical experts regarding the Sangh's role in India's freedom movement. 'Where was the RSS when the nation fought for independence?' Jha posed, further questioning the narratives presented in history and the PM's reading material.

Jha also disputed the PM's advocacy for 'atmanirbharta' or self-reliance, calling on Modi to exemplify this principle personally. 'Externally professing self-reliance, while personally relying on foreign products, creates a contradiction,' he asserted. Jha extended his critique to the dismantling of Public Sector Undertakings, which he argues were crucial to self-reliance, urging Modi to revisit his 2014 commitments to curbing communalism over his current focus on divisive topics.

Drawing a parallel with former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's historic 'tryst with destiny' speech, Jha lamented the shift in tone and content of Modi's addresses over the years. Despite these critiques, Modi celebrated the RSS for its century-long contributions to India, labeling it a significant NGO on the global stage, and delineated various strategic initiatives, including reforms in nuclear energy, GST, and more. The speech intended at motivating youth towards technological self-sufficiency, especially in the defense sector.
