The Election Commission of India (ECI) unveiled a major initiative this Tuesday, aimed at refining electoral rolls in Bihar through its Special Intensive Revision (SIR). This move is designed to ensure comprehensive voter inclusion while eliminating ineligible names from the rolls.
In recent months, the EC has introduced 28 initiatives to engage stakeholders and bolster electoral systems, including conducting 4,719 all-party meetings. These meetings brought together over 28,000 political party representatives, highlighting the EC's continuous dialogue with key political figures nationwide. Furthermore, the body has delisted 334 Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPP) for non-participation in elections over six years, with proceedings against another 476 RUPPs underway.
Technological advancements have been a focal point, especially through ECINet, a digital platform consolidating over 40 apps. It improves election data access for stakeholders, enabling Presiding Officers to report voter turnout via an app. Changes also include revising polling station limits and doubling remuneration for Booth Level Officers, aiming to streamline election operations. Officer candidates can now set up booths just outside a 100-meter radius on polling day, enhancing accessible voter identification processes.
