In the wake of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announcing the India-Pakistan cricket match for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, Congress MP Manickam Tagore voiced concerns about the board's focus on financial profits over the sentiments of Indian citizens. His comments followed criticisms from Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray, who accused the BCCI of promoting 'fake nationalism' amidst escalating tensions.

Manickam Tagore, speaking to ANI, remarked on the timing of the match, referencing past conflicts with Pakistan, including the Pahalgam incident and Operation Sindoor. He questioned the necessity of the match, emphasizing that the BCCI should consider the safety and sentiments of the Indian public beyond monetary gains. Earlier, Aaditya Thackeray highlighted the BCCI's financial motivations behind playing against Pakistan.

In a post on X, Thackeray criticized the ruling party for inconsistent actions, accusing the BCCI of capitalizing on the India-Pakistan matchup for profit, coining it '#FakeNationalism'. The controversy coincides with the BCCI's announcement of India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025, captained by Suryakumar Yadav with Shubman Gill as vice-captain. India is set to open their tournament campaign against the UAE on September 10, followed by the much-anticipated clash with Pakistan in Dubai on September 14.
