US President Donald Trump and his administration are expressing dissatisfaction with India's ongoing procurement of Russian oil, viewing it as financial support for Russia's military actions in Ukraine, according to National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett.

In response to India's purchases, Trump has imposed substantial tariffs on Indian goods, totaling 50%, starting August 27. The intention is to pressure India into reconsidering its energy purchases, framing it as a significant diplomatic issue.

Amidst the tariffs, India maintains that its procurement of Russian oil is driven by national interests and the dynamics of the global market, purchasing at a discount due to Western sanctions against Russia following the Ukraine invasion in early 2022.
