In a significant development, the Kurmi community in Jharkhand is set to commence an indefinite 'Rail Teka' blockade on Saturday, pressing for Scheduled Tribe status and the inclusion of the Kurmali language in the Constitution's Eighth Schedule. The protest will take place at various railway stations across the state.
Despite a Calcutta High Court ruling declaring the blockade plan unconstitutional on September 20, the Adivasi Kurmi Samaj has urged its members to engage in peaceful demonstrations without causing damage to railway property or inciting violence. The central president of the Kurmi Vikas Morcha, Sheetal Ohdar, emphasized the importance of non-violent protest.
While security measures are heightened, with police deploying additional forces and surveillance at sensitive stations, the Kurmi community is adamant that their demand is just. The movement has seen multiple agitation phases, notably gaining momentum after the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest phase reflects continued tension despite prohibitory orders being enacted around key locations.
