Nigerian authorities have charged six individuals, among them a retired major general and a current police inspector, with terrorism and treason. The charges relate to an alleged plan to overthrow President Bola Tinubu, according to a charge sheet reviewed by The Associated Press.
Timpre Sylva, a former governor of Bayelsa state, is accused of aiding in concealing the plot and remains at large. The charge sheet details a 13-count accusation of conspiring to wage war against the state and intimidating the President of the Federal Republic.
Earlier this year, the Nigerian government claimed to have thwarted a coup attempt, leading to military officers' trials. Nigeria, having faced multiple coups in the last century, has not experienced one since its 1999 transition to democracy. The situation mirrors a recent trend of coups and coup attempts across West and Central Africa.
