The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections kicked off at 7 AM Thursday under stringent security, with voters actively queuing at polling stations state-wide. The major contest is between the reigning DMK and the principal opposition AIADMK, with actor-politician Vijay's TVK and nationalist leder Seeman's NTK mounting significant campaigns.
Prominent figures casting their votes included AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, Congress veteran P Chidambaram, and actor Rajinikanth. Despite a challenging campaign environment marked by concerns over corruption and cultural identity, voting proceeded smoothly.
Security was enhanced with 300 companies of Central Armed Police Forces and over 83,000 state police personnel deployed. Voter facilities were comprehensive, encompassing mobility aids and bans on mobile devices to maintain order inside polling venues.
