In a dramatic escalation of political hostilities, Congress candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has claimed that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has aided the Bharatiya Janata Party's rise in the state. Speaking at a press conference, Chowdhury alleged a collusion between Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP, accusing both parties of engaging in polarization politics.
The accusations come in the wake of a violent attack on a family in the Baharampur constituency. According to Chowdhury, the family was targeted by individuals linked to the TMC, following an innocuous gesture of hospitality towards him. The alleged assault left several family members, including women and an elderly man, seriously injured.
This incident adds to the tensions following the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, marked by a remarkable 92% voter turnout and intermittent clashes. As the region anticipates the second phase of elections, scheduled for April 29, the security situation remains precarious, casting a shadow over the democratic process.
