South Africa's Municipal Elections: A Crucial Political Milestone
South Africa is preparing for its next municipal elections on November 4, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Historically, the African National Congress (ANC) performs weaker in these elections. This trend foreshadowed their parliamentary loss in 2024, leading to a coalition government under Ramaphosa.
South Africa is set to hold its upcoming municipal elections on November 4, as confirmed in a recent announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on the social media platform known as X.
Scheduled roughly every five years, the municipal elections have been eagerly anticipated by citizens. The African National Congress (ANC), the country's largest political party, usually faces challenges during these local polls. Voter resentment often centers around declining infrastructure, including worsening road conditions and water supply issues.
During the 2021 municipal elections, the ANC captured less than half of the votes, marking a significant shift since the end of apartheid in 1994. This outcome hinted at their defeat in the national election of 2024, which resulted in the ANC forming a coalition government while Ramaphosa retained the presidency.
