Haj Airfare Hike Stirs Controversy Amid Global Fuel Price Surge

The Haj Committee of India has decided to increase the airfare for the upcoming Haj by Rs 10,000 due to a significant rise in global Aviation Turbine Fuel prices. This move comes in the backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions affecting fuel costs.

The Ministry of Minority Affairs has emphasized that the airfare increase was necessary to address airline demands for a steeper hike due to the Middle East crisis. After tough negotiations, the necessary increase was limited to USD 100 per pilgrim, ensuring a more manageable burden than initially proposed.

However, this decision has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, who argue that the timing and additional financial burden are unjust. The ministry assures transparency and commitment to facilitating an accessible Haj journey for all Indian Muslims. Meanwhile, private operators have already adjusted fares, reflecting the broader market trend.
