Gianni Infantino Aims for Historic Fourth Term as FIFA President

FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed on Thursday his plans to seek a fourth term in office, aiming to continue leading the global soccer governing body. His announcement came during the closing moments of the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, with elections scheduled for March 18 in Morocco.

Infantino, who took office in 2016 and was re-elected without opposition in 2019 and 2023, expressed his humility at the opportunity. During his tenure, he has overseen the expansion of FIFA competitions, including the upcoming men's World Cup featuring 48 teams and the women's tournament, now expanded to 32 teams.

Despite achievements, Infantino's term has faced criticism over high World Cup ticket prices and other controversies. Significantly, his candidacy for re-election is backed by South America's CONMEBOL. The election coincides with Morocco's role as a co-host of the 2030 World Cup.
