West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is maintaining a significant lead over Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Suvendu Adhikari in the Bhabanipur constituency race. As of the eighth round of counting, Banerjee has secured 35,522 votes compared to Adhikari's 20,028, according to Election Commission data.
The race, held in south Kolkata, is one of the most scrutinized in the 293 assembly constituencies participating in the state elections. Banerjee initially faced a challenge after an early round saw her fall behind. However, she quickly recouped and expanded her lead significantly by the fourth round.
The tight contest underscores the stakes involved in the Bhabanipur seat, a key battle in the larger election landscape of West Bengal. With 20 rounds of counting planned, the outcome is pivotal for both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP.
