BJP candidate Harshad Parmar emerged victorious in the Umreth assembly bypoll in Gujarat, securing a commanding lead over his closest competitor, Congress's Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan, by more than 30,000 votes.
According to the Election Commission's data, Parmar amassed 85,500 votes, while Chauhan managed to garner 54,757 votes. The ballot included four other candidates, three of whom were Independents, none of whom managed to surpass even the 1,000-vote threshold.
The by-election, held on April 23, followed the death of the sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar on March 6 from a heart attack. In this first major electoral test, Harshad Parmar was chosen by the BJP to contest, his victory marking a significant win for the party. Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan, the Congress nominee, has a notable history as the president of the Umreth taluka panchayat for three consecutive terms spanning 15 years.
