Badruddin Ajmal has made a significant comeback in Assam politics by securing a victory in the Binnankandi constituency. Despite the AIUDF's diminished performance in the recent Assembly elections, Ajmal defeated Rejaul Karim Chowdhury by a margin of 35,380 votes.
The AIUDF, previously holding 15 Assembly seats, has seen a sharp decline, winning only two in the latest elections. Ajmal's triumph in the newly-created constituency signifies a noteworthy return to state politics after his 2024 Lok Sabha electoral defeat.
The victory is seen as crucial for Ajmal, reflecting his continued political influence in Assam, particularly among the Bengali-speaking Muslim community. His win comes after a delimitation process resulted in the formation of the Binnankandi seat.
