SP President Akhilesh Yadav has called for the immediate implementation of women's quotas in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. On Tuesday, Yadav challenged the ruling BJP at the Centre to commit to this timeline or transparently oppose women's interests.
He emphasized that the PDA alliance—comprising backward, Dalit, and minority groups—supports the women's reservation bill, which the opposition collectively passed in Parliament. If the BJP fails to act, Yadav warned of a sustained campaign, with protests planned weekly at various locations.
Yadav's comments come amid the SP's broader strategy to consolidate key vote banks ahead of the 2027 polls. This follows the recent defeat of the Constitution Amendment Bill, which sought to implement 33% women's reservation in legislatures, requiring a two-thirds majority to pass.(With inputs from agencies.)
