In a significant political move, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday, urging the termination of membership of six Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab who defected to the BJP. Mann emphasized on a constitutional provision allowing voters to recall elected representatives failing in their duties.
The meeting marks a response to the recent defection of seven out of ten Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MPs, undermining AAP's principles, with six MPs from Punjab switching allegiance to the BJP. During discussions with the President, Mann described this political shift as a 'murder of democracy' and a mockery of the Constitution.
Mann's visit underscores the tension between state and central political dynamics, especially with allegations of central agencies being misused for political gains. The chief minister stressed on implementing a 'Right to Recall' mechanism, empowering citizens against ineffective legislators, and reiterated Punjab's unwavering stance against any political intimidation.
