ASEAN Faces New Dynamics in Myanmar Diplomacy
Thailand's foreign minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, seeks to re-establish diplomatic ties with Myanmar within ASEAN despite previous setbacks. Thailand's Foreign Minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, announced plans to re-engage Myanmar within the ASEAN framework, after its junta was previously excluded post-coup. This initiative intends to foster dialogue with Myanmar amidst escalating conflicts.
Sihasak, following a recent discussion with Myanmar's junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, aims to introduce his diplomatic strategy during the ASEAN foreign ministers' upcoming summit in the Philippines. This approach intends to align with the broader ASEAN consensus for stabilizing the region.
Despite ASEAN's prior unsuccessful peace endeavors, Sihasak emphasizes the necessity of collective action. He advocates for moving forward constructively to alleviate Myanmar's humanitarian crisis, continuously engaging with its leadership under a peaceful transition plan.
