Hungary Returns Ukrainian Gold and Cash: A Step Towards Renewed Diplomacy
Hungary has returned $82 million in cash and gold to Ukraine, which had been seized on suspicion of money laundering. The move comes as Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government steps down. Ukraine views this as a positive step towards normalizing relations under the leadership of incoming leader Peter Magyar.
In a significant diplomatic measure, Hungary has returned cash and gold valued at $82 million to Ukraine's Oschadbank. This material was initially seized by Budapest's security service in March under suspicions of money laundering.
Outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban had held seven Ukrainians accountable for transporting the assets, an act Kyiv condemned as unjust. The return of these assets has been warmly welcomed by Ukraine, who view it as a 'civilized step' taken by Hungary amid leadership changes.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, praised the new Hungarian government under Peter Magyar for fostering a more pragmatic relationship. With Orban's ties to Russia and opposition to Ukrainian aid no longer in office, Kyiv hopes for constructive ties ahead.
