Election Turmoil: Arrests and Accusations in West Bengal
Post-election violence in West Bengal, India, led to hundreds of arrests and three deaths, including an aide to a BJP leader. Accusations between BJP and TMC highlight ongoing political tension, with Mamata Banerjee refusing to concede defeat. The state has a history of similar unrest post-elections.
Violence erupted in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal following the recent election, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including an aide to a prominent BJP leader. This disturbing outbreak of unrest led to the arrest of over 400 people, according to police chief Siddh Nath Gupta.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, triumphed over the incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) in a heated election. Despite her defeat, Banerjee has refused to step down, claiming the Election Commission colluded with BJP to orchestrate the election's outcome.
The BJP has accused the TMC of orchestrating 'targeted assassinations,' while the TMC condemned what it called 'BJP-backed miscreants' for the violence. This post-election turmoil is not unprecedented in West Bengal; similar violent incidents occurred after the previous election in 2021.
