AfD Rising: The Far-Right's Surge in Saxony-Anhalt
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is positioned to lead a regional government for the first time as polls indicate their strong support in Saxony-Anhalt. With the party outpacing the ruling CDU, political instability and coalition challenges loom ahead of the September election.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is poised to become the leading party in an upcoming eastern state election. A recent infratest dimap poll reported that the AfD enjoys 41% support in Saxony-Anhalt, notably ahead of the ruling CDU's 26%.
The rise of the AfD in former Communist eastern states reflects a broader disillusionment with the coalition government. Despite resistance from other parties to cooperate with the AfD, its policies on migration and ties with Russia are gaining traction amid economic uncertainties.
The upcoming election on September 6 may lead to complex coalition negotiations, with the Left party at 12%, and both the Greens and populist BSW at 4%, below the threshold for state parliament entry.
