Paraguayan President Santiago Pena emphasized the strong bond between Paraguay and Taiwan, rooted in freedom and democracy, amid Chinese demands to cut ties with Taipei. During his visit to Taiwan, Pena called attention to the enduring friendship and shared values that extend beyond mere diplomatic formalities.
Pena's visit, his second as president, underscores Paraguay's steadfast support for Taiwan, a stance maintained by only 12 countries worldwide. During his speech to university students in Taipei, Pena highlighted the concrete achievements and opportunities arising from the bilateral alliance.
In contrast, China's Foreign Ministry urged Paraguay to align with the 'One China' principle and sever diplomatic links with Taiwan. Despite such pressures, Paraguay remains committed to its partnership with Taiwan, an island Beijing views as part of its territory, a claim Taipei's leaders continue to reject.
