Pinarayi Vijayan, the former Chief Minister and CPI(M) Politburo member, has addressed the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) surprising defeat in the Kerala Assembly elections. Breaking his silence, Vijayan acknowledged the unexpected nature of the loss and extended his congratulations to the United Democratic Front (UDF) for their victory.

In a statement following a state committee meeting, Vijayan emphasized that the LDF would assume the role of a responsible opposition. He highlighted the importance of pushing the new government to implement various welfare measures championed by the previous Left administration, such as eradicating extreme poverty, empowering women, and enhancing social security.

Vijayan also expressed concern over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing three seats, calling it a worrying development for secularism advocates. The elections concluded with the UDF securing 102 of the 140 assembly seats, compared to the LDF's 35 and the BJP's newly acquired three.
