Activist Alleges Torture by Israel, Calls for Sanctions
Brazilian activist Thiago Avila, deported from Israel, accuses Israeli forces of torture and witnessing abuses against Palestinian prisoners. Avila was part of a flotilla attempting to deliver aid to Gaza. Both Spain and Brazil criticized the detention as unlawful. Avila demands international reaction against Israeli actions.
Brazilian activist Thiago Avila returned to Sao Paulo this Monday, voicing serious allegations against Israeli forces after his detention in Israel that led to deportation. Claiming torture and abuse, Avila alleged witnessing Palestinian prisoners suffer worse conditions during the ten days he spent in custody.
The incident unfolded as part of the second Global Sumud Flotilla from Spain, aimed at breaking the blockade of Gaza by delivering aid. The flotilla was intercepted, resulting in the detention of Avila and Spanish national Abu Keshek. Over 100 other activists were sent to Crete under suspicion of aiding the enemy, charges both men denied.
The governments of Spain and Brazil denounced the detentions as unlawful. Human rights group Adalah's claims of torture were rejected by Israel, insisting legal procedures were followed. Avila called for international action against Israeli and U.S. leaders, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
