Peruvian Presidential Candidate Roberto Sanchez Faces Financial Crime Accusations
Roberto Sanchez, a leftist presidential candidate in Peru, has been accused of financial crimes by a prosecutor. The charges relate to false statements and falsifying campaign contributions. Despite this, Sanchez is still advancing to the presidential runoff. A decision on proceeding to trial is expected on May 27.
Peruvian politics has been rocked as leftist presidential hopeful Roberto Sanchez faces serious accusations of financial misconduct. RPP reported Tuesday that a prosecutor has charged Sanchez with making false statements and manipulating campaign contribution details. These accusations arise amid electoral authorities confirming Sanchez's progression to a runoff election.
The prosecutor's office is seeking a five-year, four-month prison sentence for Sanchez, along with his disqualification from candidacy, should he be convicted. The charges focus on inaccuracies in financial documentation submitted by his party during the 2020 and 2021 campaign cycles. With most ballots counted, Sanchez is set to face conservative rival Keiko Fujimori in the next voting round.
Sanchez's legal defense has pushed back against these allegations, with his lawyer attributing responsibility for financial report discrepancies to the party treasurer rather than Sanchez himself. The judiciary will determine on May 27 if the case against Sanchez will proceed to trial.
