Nigel Farage Under Scrutiny for Undeclared £5 Million Gift
Britain's parliamentary watchdog is investigating Nigel Farage over claims he accepted a 5 million pound gift without declaring it. Allegations arose from rival parties earlier this year, accusing Farage of breaching rules. Farage insists the donation was for personal security, not political purposes.
Britain's parliamentary watchdog has launched an investigation into Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform UK party, to determine if he breached rules by not declaring a significant financial gift. The BBC revealed on Wednesday that the gift in question amounted to 5 million pounds ($6.75 million).
Allegations against Farage, whose party recently scored a major victory in local elections, stem from a failure to declare a donation from a cryptocurrency investor. According to parliamentary regulations, members must report any donations in the year before an election within a month of taking office.
Reform UK and the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner's office have remained silent on requests for comments. Farage stated that the donation from crypto investor Christopher Harborne was solely for personal security expenses, arguing it was not intended for political use. This comes amid intensified scrutiny over Reform UK's funding sources, as the party leads in national opinion polls.
