AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami has declared that he possesses the authority to appoint a whip for the Assembly, according to MLA Thalavai Sundaram's statement on Wednesday.
This assertion comes after dissident AIADMK members, led by MLAs C Ve Shanmugam and S P Velumani, challenged Palaniswami to produce evidence of a resolution sanctioning the whip's appointment. Sundaram pointed to the Constitution's tenth schedule as justification for Palaniswami's claim, emphasizing the party leader's prerogative to appoint a whip.
The internal rift within AIADMK became apparent during the trust vote, with 25 MLAs backing the government, contradicting the party's directive. Palaniswami maintains that his position as general secretary grants him the right to make such appointments, and he hinted at potential legal action against those defying the party's instructions.
