Texas Hospital Launches 'Detransition Clinic' Amid Controversy
Texas Children's Hospital will establish the first 'detransition clinic' for reversing gender-affirming treatments after settling a probe. They will also fire five doctors and pay $10 million for alleged Medicaid billing violations. The move comes after investigations by the U.S. Justice Department and the Texas Attorney General.
Texas Children's Hospital, the largest children's hospital in the United States, is set to open the country's first 'detransition clinic' aimed at reversing gender-affirming treatments for transgender youth. This move is part of a settlement agreement following a joint investigation initiated by the state and the Trump administration.
The dispute, involving billing practices that violated state law, will result in the termination of five doctors involved in performing these procedures. Additionally, the hospital agreed to pay $10 million for allegedly improper billing under the state's Medicaid program for treatments that are prohibited by law in Texas.
Announcing the settlement, the U.S. Justice Department and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton highlighted the importance of adherence to state law, while reinforcing the clinic's role in addressing concerns tied to previous treatments for transgender youth.
