Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday condoled the death of former Uttarakhand CM Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri, saying the nation will remember him for his public service, simplicity and honesty.
Veteran leader Khanduri died at a private hospital in Dehradun around 11 am on Tuesday, following a prolonged illness. He was 91.
Soren said the news of Khanduri's passing was extremely heartbreaking.
''He always placed the values of simplicity, honesty and public service above all in his public life. His contributions to the nation and society will forever remain memorable. May Marang Buru (supreme tribal deity) grant peace to the departed soul and provide strength to the bereaved family to endure this hour of grief,'' Soren posted on X.
Before entering politics, Khanduri retired from the Indian Army as a major general. Popularly known as 'General Sahab', he earned a reputation as a disciplined and strict administrator.
Khanduri served as the chief minister of the hill state twice.
He also served as a Union minister. He held the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in the cabinet of the late prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was credited with executing the Golden Quadrilateral project.
