Veteran Marxist Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said that the LDF defeat in the recent assembly polls in Kerala did not mark the end of the Left front or the CPI(M) in the state as both will return more powerful to lead the southern state.
Speaking at a party event here, Vijayan said that the LDF and CPI(M) have faced defeat in elections in the past and have come back stronger and they will do so again.
While acknowledging that the LDF suffered a huge defeat in the polls, he said that during the last 10 years of Left rule, the government endeavoured to bring comprehensive and inclusive development in Kerala.
''We are not saying only we can bring development. We want a continuation of the development activities initiated in the state and the UDF government has to do that.
''They need to do everything possible for the welfare of the public and we will support the same,'' he said.
At the same time, Vijayan also said that any actions to the contrary will be strongly opposed by the LDF.
''In this manner, we will function as a constructive opposition,'' he said.
The UDF achieved a thumping victory in the assembly polls by winning 102 of the 140 seats, while the CPI(M) got only 35 and the BJP opened its account in the state with 3.
