An organisation representing Mizoram government employees on Thursday announced that its members will go on mass leave on June 8 over the demand for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

Leaders of the Mizoram Movement for Old Pension Scheme said a meeting of the organisation held on Wednesday decided to observe a mass casual leave as part of the agitation.

MIMOPS, which represents government employees covered under the NPS, said the state government had failed to make any encouraging progress on the long-pending demand for restoration of OPS, forcing the organisation to intensify its movement despite its reluctance to confront the authorities.

The organisation appealed to all members to extend full support to the proposed protest, warning that a lack of unity could weaken the movement in the future.

''We urgently need solidarity from all members. If full support is not received now, it may become increasingly difficult to continue the movement effectively,'' MIMOPS said in a statement.

The organisation also criticised the state government for not implementing the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), even though the Centre had rolled it out from April 1 last year.

MIMOPS said states such as Maharashtra, Assam, Tripura and Manipur had already extended the UPS to employees despite not constituting study committees on the issue.
