Karnataka govt to review beneficiaries for guarantee schemes: D K Shivakumar

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Monday said the government is considering reviewing its list of beneficiaries for the guarantee schemes by asking them to resubmit their documents, as crores of rupees are being diverted to ineligible recipients.

He was responding to a question about plans to review the guarantee schemes as ineligible people are receiving the benefits.

''A number of beneficiaries have died, and around Rs 100 crore is going to ineligible recipients, resulting in misuse, we have records of this. Also, beneficiaries have given someone else's phone numbers in many cases, so we need to know whether the benefits are reaching the right beneficiaries,'' Shivakumar said.

Speaking to reporters, he said, ''Lots of discussions have happened and suggestions have come to ask the beneficiaries to once again submit their documents properly. We have got information of about Rs 100 crore with the Gruh Lakshmi scheme alone. We are reviewing at every taluk and gathering information.''.

In 2026-27, the government has allocated Rs 51,286 crore for the five schemes.

The Congress government's five guarantee schemes are -200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), the additional 5 kg of rice to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), Rs 3,000 every month for unemployed graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders for two years (YuvaNidhi), and free travel for women in public transport buses (Shakti).
