Congress general secretary K C Venugopal on Monday alleged that the central government has failed to address issues faced by the common people, and that unemployment and rising prices have worsened the situation.
Speaking to reporters at the airport here, the Alappuzha MP said people across the country are distressed and the government is not taking adequate steps to resolve their problems.
''People are suffering. The government is doing nothing to address their concerns. Petrol and diesel prices are increasing every day and the public is facing serious difficulties,'' Venugopal said.
Petrol prices were raised by Rs 2.61 a litre and diesel prices by Rs 2.71 a litre on Monday, the fourth increase in less than two weeks that extended a delayed pass-through of soaring global crude oil costs triggered by the Iran conflict.
The latest increase took cumulative hikes since May 15 to nearly Rs 7.5 per litre.
Venugopal further claimed that unemployment is at its peak and that the youth are struggling to find jobs.
He said the Congress and its allied organisations are carrying out protests and movements on these issues across the country.
Venugopal was in Pushkar to attend a 10-day training camp for Rajasthan Congress district presidents under the 'Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan'.
