Three women were arrested for allegedly attacking a police officer and obstructing a civic drive against unauthorised constructions in Thane district, an official said on Monday.

As per the Thane Rural police official, the incident took place on May 22 at Khajurinagar in Baneli area of Titwala during action by the municipal corporation's unauthorised construction demolition squad.

''The eviction team was carrying out action against illegal chawls in Ward Sector 1/A of Kalyan when a group of women allegedly attacked members of the team. The accused were identified as Rubina Mohammad Shafiq Khan (42), Safia Mohammad Shafiq Khan (23), Shahina Mohammad Shafiq Khan (21), Sarafun Sheikh and Shaheen Qasim Khan,'' he said.

They assaulted assistant inspector Sarla Kale and other women personnel deployed for security during the demolition drive, the official said.

Kale displayed leadership and played a major role in successfully carrying out action against 280 unauthorised houses and 50 'jhopdis' in the area, the police release said.

Based on a complaint lodged by Shankar Narayan Jadhav, superintendent of A Ward area of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation, a case was registered at Kalyan Taluka police station.

Rubina, Safia and Shahina Khan were arrested on May 23, the release stated.
