Sanctions Intensify Amidst Struggle Over Strait of Hormuz Control

The United States has escalated tensions with Iran by sanctioning the Persian Gulf Strait Authority. This Iranian entity was specifically created to manage the vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel that accounts for about 20% of the global oil supply.

This move by Tehran to close the strait followed aggressive actions from the U.S. and Israel, who launched a war against Iran at the end of February. These sanctions target anyone engaging with the authority, who are warned they may inadvertently support the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized the Iranian military's efforts, branding them as desperation tactics for revenue. Meanwhile, the Authority released a map further asserting Tehran's claims over significant waters, intensifying regional geopolitical instability.
