Himachal Pradesh has initiated the second phase of its local body elections, featuring 1,276 panchayats, with polls beginning at 7 AM. This phase invites participation from 17,30,300 eligible voters, including a significant number of female voters and individuals from the third gender.
The first voting phase, conducted on Tuesday across 1,293 panchayats, achieved a turnout of 78.90%. The third and last phase is scheduled for May 30. Votes will be counted immediately except for key posts like block samiti and zila parishad, as well as four municipal corporations, with results expected on May 31. Notably, 10,854 officials were elected uncontested.
Ballot papers are distinctly color-coded: white signifies ward members, yellow for up-pradhans, green for pradhans, pink for panchayat samiti members, and blue for zila parishad members. An electoral disruption due to rule violations postponed elections for a specific ward in Chamba, now set for May 30.
In the entire process, approximately 50.89 lakh voters are tasked with polling to fill 31,182 positions, which include the roles of pradhans, up-pradhans, ward members, panchayat samiti, and zila parishad members.
