Latvia Welcomes Andris Kulbergs as New Prime Minister
Latvia's parliament has approved a new center-right government led by Andris Kulbergs as prime minister. The formation follows drone incidents that destabilized the prior coalition. The coalition will prioritize national security, as well as maintain support for Ukraine and focus on measures against Russia.
In a significant political development, Latvia's parliament approved the establishment of a new government with center-right opposition figure Andris Kulbergs as prime minister. This shift arises amid security concerns following recent drone incursions, which led to the collapse of the previous ruling coalition.
The four-party coalition, comprising Kulbergs' United List, the New Unity party of former Prime Minister Evika Silina, the National Alliance, and the Greens and Farmers' Union, received the backing of 66 out of 96 votes in the Saeima. Security and economic stability are prioritized by the incoming administration, with an emphasis also placed on bolstering the country's energy sector.
Kulbergs highlighted the immediacy of upcoming elections as a direct test of the new government's popularity and effectiveness. Meanwhile, the coalition has promised continued support for Ukraine and outlined plans to implement measures to counteract Russian influence.
