The memory of last year's devastating landslide remains vivid for the people of Kerala. In response, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has intensified efforts to improve weather predictions. A radar commissioned in Mangalore is set to boost localized weather forecasting in the region.
IMD Regional Director Neetha K Gopal informed PTI Video about the shift from district-wide to hyper-local weather alerts through the existing 'Nowcast' system. This transition aims to enhance accuracy in predicting extreme weather events by targeting specific affected areas.
The new radar will cover Kerala's Northern districts, aiding precise warnings and potentially mitigating disasters. As the monsoon approaches, IMD predicts above-normal rainfall without disruptions, emphasizing the importance of vigilance due to Kerala's history of extreme weather events.
