Pope Leo Revives Castel Gandolfo Summer Tradition

Pope Leo, elected in May, resumes a summer tradition by spending time at Castel Gandolfo through July, in a break from Pope Francis' practice of staying at the Vatican. Castel Gandolfo, used by popes for centuries, offers a cooler climate and rich history, complementing Leo's restful retreat.

With Rome's temperatures climbing above 35°C, Pope Leo has opted for a summer retreat outside the city. The Vatican announced his decision to spend part of July in Castel Gandolfo, a historic papal getaway on Lake Albano, marking a return to a long-standing tradition.

Following Pope Francis' passing, Leo was elected to the papacy in early May. Unlike his predecessor, who preferred the Vatican, Leo will continue the tradition of past popes by enjoying cooler climates and serene landscapes of Castel Gandolfo.

Previously, Francis transformed the papal palace at Castel Gandolfo into a museum; however, Leo will reside on another property while the palace remains open to the public. This retreat, coinciding with Italy's celebration of the feast of the Assumption, underscores a revival of historic practices within the Vatican.
