A cutting-edge, solar-powered waste management facility was inaugurated at New Delhi's Khan Market on Thursday. This innovative project is a joint venture by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group, and SUEZ India, targeting a shift towards decentralized, sustainable waste management.
The MMRF+RRR centre aims to effectively manage different waste categories, including old clothes, electronics, and domestic hazardous waste. These items will be strategically sorted and recycled, enhancing resource recovery and reducing landfill pressure. The center is among eight hubs transformed into green facilities across NDMC regions, aligning with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
This initiative emphasizes renewable energy usage, with solar panels powering operational needs like fans and machines, ensuring an eco-friendly approach. The center also integrates trained waste-pickers into formal systems, improving their working conditions and livelihoods. Attendees at the launch included NDMC Chairperson Keshav Chandra and Chintan Founder Bharati Chaturvedi, who stressed community involvement in waste management efforts.
