In Assam, authorities are probing the collapse of a newly repaired bridge over the Harang River, connecting the state to Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur. Officials report that five individuals have been arrested, and three policemen suspended in connection with the incident.
The bridge on the Silchar-Kalain Road gave way on Wednesday, plunging two overloaded trucks into the river. While no casualties were reported, the drivers sustained injuries. Among those arrested are three employees of a government-approved weighbridge and two from Bharat Electronics Weighbridge.
Local officials have arranged boat services and alternate routes for light vehicles to ameliorate disrupted road communication. Plans for a new bridge, using pre-fabricated materials, are underway with expectations to restore normal traffic within weeks. Criticism has arisen over poor-quality repair work, with reports indicating that the trucks exceeded the bridge's weight limit.
