Urgent Call for Climate Action: Beyond 2050 Promises

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has raised a crucial alarm about the global climate crisis, emphasizing the immediate need for substantive actions instead of hollow pledges for 2050 and beyond.

Ramesh referred to a comprehensive analysis published by 60 renowned scientists worldwide, including two Indians, updating global climate change indicators for the third year. The analysis shows a deceleration in carbon dioxide emissions increase compared to the previous decade, yet highlights an alarming surge in the global mean sea level.

Expressing concern, Ramesh warned that persistent greenhouse gas emissions could trigger human-induced global warming to breach the crucial 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold in about five years. He criticized current U.S. policies for potentially hastening this tipping point, further noting that 2024 is already the warmest year recorded. Ramesh insists on the need for immediate and decisive measures.
