Heavy rains over the past 24 hours have stoked fears of fresh flooding and landslides in Wayanad's Mundakkai-Chooralmala region, a year after deadly landslides claimed over 200 lives. Though no new landslides have been reported, local anxieties are high following reports of marshy odors and debris moving downhill.
District Collector D R Meghashree assured that there's no immediate cause for alarm, urging vigilance and advising residents to avoid restricted areas. As rain continues, discussions with the government will proceed regarding livelihood support for local laborers who can no longer work.
The Chooralmala River is in spate, causing soil runoff along its banks. Rising rivers like Kabani and Panamaram, plus a red alert near the Banasura dam, underline the severity of the situation. Protests have emerged over perceived lapses in governmental rehabilitation efforts.
