The construction of the Thilamale' Bridge in the Maldives, financed by India, has reached a significant milestone with 60 per cent completion, according to Maldives' Infrastructure Minister Abdulla Muthalib. The completion of the piling works marks a crucial step in the project.
The 6.7 km bridge, which connects capital Male to Vilimale, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu, is supported by a USD 100 million grant and a USD 400 million credit line from India's Exim Bank. The initiative is one of the largest projects launched during former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's tenure.
India's Afcons Infrastructure was awarded the project in August 2021. Despite initial deadlines, the project timeline has been extended multiple times. The bridge will feature the world's tallest precast segments at 8.2 meters, showcasing innovative engineering.
