Greek firefighters are vigorously combating a fierce wildfire on Crete, a popular vacation hotspot. The blaze has been exacerbated by forceful winds, threatening homes and leading to the evacuation of residents and tourists from multiple settlements.
About 155 firefighters, aided by 38 engines and water trucks, are battling the flames in Ierapetra, located on the island's southeastern coast. Reinforcements are en route from Athens by sea and air to support the ongoing effort.
Local media report damage to property and the relocation of around 3,000 evacuees to temporary shelters. The recurrence of such destructive wildfires in Greece is attributed to climate change, causing concern over the increasing threat they pose during the country's hot and dry summers.
