Delhi govt to install over 200 CCTV cameras at Saket District Court complex

The Public Works Department (PWD) will install more than 200 advanced CCTV cameras at the Saket District Court complex to strengthen safety and surveillance, officials said on Friday.

The move comes in response to rising concerns over security, especially after the killing of an undertrial prisoner inside the lockup last month.

To ensure round-the-clock monitoring and prevent future incidents, the government will invest Rs 2.4 crore to modernise the existing security infrastructure. According to the plan 168 bullet cameras and 101 eight mega pixel dome cameras will be installed at the court building and residential complex.

Officials said along with CCTV cameras a records room and an internet protocol (IP) based surveillance system to keep watch 24x7 across the district court complex is being planned. On June 5 an undertrial prisoner was killed inside the lockup at the court complex allegedly by two other inmates over an old enmity.

After the incident the principal district and sessions judge of south Delhi had said ''integrated security equipment'' were being installed at the gates of the Saket district court complex.

The PWD will also integrate the existing CCTV cameras with the IP based system and the tender has been floated for the project. It will take three months to complete the work from the time work is awarded, a PWD official said. According to the Delhi High Court's November 2021 directions for ensuring safety in the district court premises, authorities were required to undertake a security audit, besides checking all vehicles entering the court premises and installing CCTV cameras.
